You may be familiar with Honda’s CR-Z hybrid sports car, but this time I would like to introduce you to its ancestor, the CR-X. The FF lightweight sports car that appeared in the 1980s and took the world by storm. Its lightweight, compact body and high-speed engine gained popularity, and it is a car that has been supported by many car enthusiasts on the mountain difficult part.
What kind of car is Honda CR-X?
In 1983, it was the first model to appear as a derivative of the Civic’s sister car, the Ballad, under the name of “Ballard Sport CR-X.” Later, in 1987, the name of “ballad” was removed and “CR-X” appeared.
Adopt double wishbones on the front and back. Due to its high turning ability and excellent controllability, it is often used in gymkhana competitions and has a reputation for its athletic performance.
The engine of the highest grade “SiR” had an ultra-high performance engine of 1,600cc and 160PS.
This can only be achieved with some high-end sports cars even today, and the NA engine achieves a phenomenal output of 100 PS per liter displacement. With a lightweight body of only 1,000 kg combined with 5MT, I was able to enjoy the chest acceleration.
The dramatic rotating feel and exhaust sound of the muffler, which could not be found in current hybrid and eco-cars, attracted young people at the time.
CR-X fuel and maintenance costs
The fuel economy of around 15km per liter was good for the time, and the maintenance cost was not so high because of the compact car of 1,500-1,600cc, so it was a wallet-friendly car that even young people could own.
A common problem is rainwater leaking from sunroofs and roof moldings. Also, since the body rigidity is not so high, troubles such as abnormal noise and distortion occur. And since the mission system and the electrical system are often broken down due to the age of the model, you need to be careful when buying a used one.
What is the price / market of the used CR-X used car?
At present, the average used car market of CR-X seems to be around 500,000 yen. (As of December 2019)
In particular, those with good grade of “SiR” and near normal are traded at high prices, and such cars are very rare. In the used car market of such sports cars, the number tends to increase as the number of cars decreases in the future, so it may be one way to buy them carefully.
Conversely, things that are too cheap or have a large discount should be avoided given the cost of maintenance and repairs.
